Welcome! Welcome to the Land of Imaginary Cats! I'm your guide and I hope to teach you all about those fantastical, fictional felines who creep in and out of our favorite movies, books, cartoons, comics, songs, legends, stationery, and oh, so much more. I'll try to stick to pretend kitties, but the occasional real cat might sneak its way in, if it seems to be a particularly relevant muse (mews? I'm not averse to horrible cat puns!) to a particularly relevant creator. Thank you for visiting! I'm so happy you're here!

Sophocles the Hyena, Illustrated by Andy Warhol

andywarhol, originally uploaded by Kit Knitty.

I found this illustration in a book called "Best in Children's Books," from 1960. It has some really nice artwork by Andy Warhol. I've scanned all the pages and posted them to my Flickr account to share with people. The book is not easy to find. (Try Etsy or Abebooks.)

I love these illustrations and now wish I could find the other books he illustrated. (There are at least 4 others.)

Richard Scarry also has some artwork in the book that's okay, but it's not nearly as good as his artwork in this book for the Three Little Pigs. You can see a detail from the cover on the listing page.

25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy by Andy Warhol

In 1954, Andy Warhol made a book with his mother.  He drew the kitties; She did the calligraphy.

Of course, you can learn more about the book here.

And you can learn more about Warhol's animal illustrations here.

And you can see more Sam images here.

Do check them out.  They're lovely!

Oh, and here's a really nice piece from the Tate Gallery's website about Warhol's relationship with his mother and their work together.

And if you want to see another Warhol cat book, you can check out Powell's Holy Cats gallery here!
